DAY 60 – Nanga Bay

Good Morning Nanga Bay!

Low 13°c (46°F) – High 22°c (72°F)
158km

What a difference a day makes – hot water bottles the previous night – last night the fan.  It was quite warm, Kitty was hot and so were we so a fan ran all night just moving the air around to make it more comfortable.  Instead of letting the alarm do the hard work to wake us up, my stupid brain felt it was its job to wake me every half hour or so from about 3.00am just to make sure we hadn’t overslept.  When the alarm went off at 5.30am I was tired, as was Shane.  During the preceding 2.5 hours I heard the rain on the roof of the van – not heavy but enough to wet everything, and I think we ended up talking ourselves out of going, including the concern that half the kids and adults we’ve been seeing over the last week have been coughing and sneezing and a serious lack of social distancing when in a group.  Neither of us can afford the time or the health concerns to get Covid or the Flu so we’ve been trying to steer clear of crowds as much as we can.  We decided to still go back to Monkey Mia but just not for the 7.45am feature, and rolled over and went back to sleep.

Fast forward a couple of hours and a lot of noise outside the van woke us up as families started packing down their campsites, kids said their goodbyes and particular homage to a young child who was walking around the back of our site using a plastic water container as a drum – at 7.30am.

Kitty had a really good sleep in and so by the time she got her day started we were almost ready to head off for a drive around.  Our plan was to visit any of the lookouts we had missed yesterday after heading for Monkey Mia first and working our way back.  Sadly the day was completely overcast so we knew photo opportunities weren’t going to produce anything startling today.

On our arrival at Monkey Mia we were thrilled to find that a pod of 4 dolphins were swimming around the area adjacent to the beach and jetty and we watched them for some time, taking photos and just generally enjoying the sense of grace and fun these animals exhibited.  They came so close to the shoreline that you could be knee deep in water and have been within arm’s reach.  Inquisitively popping up for a look around, they did at least 3 laps of the area while we were there before moving out further into the bay.  Having had our dolphin experience after all, we wandered through the gift shop again and then back to the car to return to camp via a few scenic stops.

Clouds parted and re-clustered for most of the trip producing such a mixed bag of photo light.  Mostly though it was dull and photos didn’t do justice to the water or the shores.  We did another trip into Denham (being careful to stick to the speed limits around town) to once again top up with fuel and grab a late lunch.  We should have stuck to the fuel as the pies we got from one of the cafes were stone cold and having asked for plain pies, they bagged up steak, onion & mushroom and sadly I don’t eat mushrooms.  The vanilla slice ended up being lunch along with some chicken bites that Shane picked up when paying for the fuel.

Back at camp we were a little surprised to see that while 2/3 of the camp had vacated this morning, the camp was only about half full tonight with only a few new residents rolling in.  Not willing to risk another round of mosquito bites, I stayed at the van and Shane went for a walk down the hill to the back of the park in the hope of some sunset shots given the clouds that were still hanging around weren’t blocking the view.  Meanwhile Kitty caught up on some sleep now much happier to be out of the car and able to relax on her blankets.  Thankfully we finally had some decent sunset pics as we’ve had so little cloud for the entire 2 months we’ve been away that all the sunsets were looking pretty much the same to the point where most nights we didn’t bother to try to take photos.

We have a bit of a drive tomorrow so will try to get a reasonably early night and hope for a decent sleep.
