DAY 22 – Darwin

Good Morning Darwin!

Low 24°c (75°F) – High 32°c (90°F)
122km

A good night’s sleep had by all last night, thanks to the aircon.  After a slow start to the morning and no particular plans for the day we decided to venture out for a drive around Darwin and surrounding suburbs to re-acquaint ourselves with everything – although for some (read here Shane) it was probably unnecessary as he has a unique ability to remember places like this as though he has lived there for years.

Our mini tour included Stokes Hill Wharf, Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal and surrounding residential areas with their very upmarket waterfront houses including expensive water craft docked at their doorsteps in Cullen Bay, past the site for Mindil Beach Market where storeholders were already setting up for the market tonight, on to Nightcliff Jetty (a favourite of ours for sunset photography), further north to Lee Point, past the war museum, a quick stop off for a late Subway lunch, and then back to Darwin city for a quick drive around and home to Howard Springs.

I had forgotten how much I love the tropical gardens up here, particularly the palms (and especially the lipstick and foxtail palms), the amazing Crotons and Bromeliads, and the spectacular flowers on Bougainvilleas and Frangipani.

We spent the rest of the afternoon and some of the evening sitting out under the awning which was very pleasant with the fan and a slight breeze blowing.  Even Miss Kitty was quite happy to sleep (something she does exceedingly well these days) while we chatted about the day and general events.  That was until the mosquitoes arrived and I retreated inside.
