DAY 29 – Katherine

Good Morning Katherine!

Low 18°c (64°F) – High 29°c (84°F)
20km

A much cooler night overnight which resulted in no required air conditioner for the first time in many days.  Everyone slept much better.  A quiet day today with a bit of shopping required to top up supplies but at the same time trying to carefully calculate what we’ll need for the next 5 days before crossing over the border into Western Australia.  No fruit, vegetables, nuts or honey can be taken across the border so we’ll need to use what we purchased or face throwing it away to avoid any fines at the quarantine station.

A welcoming undercover parking area has been installed, since our last visit, at the front of the local Woolworths.  With the much lower temperature early in the day, Kitty was quite comfortable sitting in the car while we did a quick grocery shop.  Some drama though as I tried to withdraw cash and the machine didn’t spit anything out.  The lady overseeing the self serve section not being particularly helpful in getting my issue resolved after trying several times to force the machine to hand over the money and with me asking if it would be possible for her to just arrange to give me the money from a different checkout allowing me to be on my way without having to wait an excessive amount of time while she tried to fix it.  After trying to extract the money going through a tedious process of touching screen after screen no less than 5 times, she finally went to the enquiry counter and came back with the cash and I was on my way at least 15-20 minutes later.

Back to camp to unpack food and try to find a space in the fridge and freezer, the logistics of which sometimes brings out my very best Tetris skills and a quick lunch and we then took a little bit of a drive around town.  One of our favourite discoveries about Katherine is the Low Level Nature Reserve incorporating the Katherine River which is located off to the rear of the location of the caravan park.  It has always had a heavy concentration of Kites, medium sized birds of prey that are magnificent to watch soaring across the skies.  The river has a spillway near the bridge that crosses it from Katherine via the Victoria Highway.  On our last visit 3 years ago there was a watchful Eastern Great Egret who spent his time fishing where the water tumbled through to the river below.  As we arrived we saw one again – whether it was the same bird or not, he was just as committed to his task as his predecessor 3 years ago.  There are obviously a lot of fish in the river and a number of them were trusting their luck swimming near the waterfalls seeking their own passing food supplies.

After getting a good number of shots we headed back to the local chemist who required a two hour wait to fill a couple of Shane’s prescriptions before topping up fuel and heading back to camp.  Before dinner we decided to pop over to Mick and Deb’s site to wish them well on their trip into Queensland as they are heading off tomorrow morning.  We had a lovely chat and such a nice night for a stroll through the park but back to the van because out came the mozzies yet again.
