Good Morning Esperance!
Low 8°c (46°F) – High 16°c
(61°F)
10km
It was a cloudy morning this morning, no opportunity for sunrise
photos, but the day definitely warmed up a little despite the forecast only
being for 16 degrees. Trying to think
ahead to what opportunities we’ll have for washing, I decided to run through
what we had using the park machine and dryer just to get it out of the
way. I hate wasting the money but for
the convenience today it was $8 well spent and a whole bunch less hassle to
give us more time to look around – well that was the plan – and you know what
they say about plans.
The weather was so nice we set up the pens for Kitty whose tail started
wagging the moment she discovered it, and had a lovely couple of hours sitting
outside, having lunch and a coffee and just enjoying the sun while it lasted. While going through thinking about what we
had picked up at the op shop yesterday I suddenly realized that we had left
behind a huge ball of pink trim (not for use with Pirates, but I do have some
other craft projects in mind for it). So
we called the store and arranged to pick it up.
We had a quick look around town and took a couple of shots near the
foreshore again as well as a lovely fountain and a fantastic mural. From a suggestion made by a member of their
Aboriginal Advisory Group two years prior, Esperance Community Arts, in
partnership with Seawater Families, Escare Incorporated and with the support of
Esperance Tjlatjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC),
embarked on a project that would invite professional mural artist Matt Adnate
to paint a portrait of an influential Nyungar Elder. With the help of ETNTAC, the six Nyungar
families of Traditional Owners were consulted about the mural content. The decision was made, with unanimous support,
that a portrait of the late Mr. Tom Bullen, a highly respected Elder and the
lead applicant on the local Native Title claim, should be the focus for
Adnate’s mural. The mural, entitled
“Wanju Kepa Kurl Boodja” (Welcome to Esperance Country), constitutes a
permanent Welcome to Country on the community’s Esplanade.
But it was around this time it occurred to me that I may now have a bit
of an issue. A few months before we left
I had an abscess under my tooth which thankfully cleared up with a strong
course of antibiotics. It had been really
severe with one side of my face swelling a great deal and the pain had been
terrible. Well yes you guessed it – 2 days
before we are due to hit the Nullarbor I have a very red and tender gum and
some slight swelling on my cheek which came on in a matter of a couple of
hours. Wasting no time we headed for the
Emergency Room for the second time this trip.
Thankfully the wait was only two hours and bonus knowledge of a clear
RAT test and I was on my way with a prescription for more drugs. I’m not feeling very reassured as it’s only a
5 day supply but hopefully it will do the trick to get us over the border. Everything crossed here anyway.
So that was the end of the day, with the exception that on our return
from the hospital I ventured across the road from the caravan park to take a
couple of photos of the foreshore. We’re
sorry to be leaving Esperance as it is a really lovely town that we would
happily stay longer and return to hopefully one day, but we now have even more
reasons to keep moving towards home.
