Days 1 & 2 - Colac - Beulah

Day 1 & 2 – and what busy days they were.

Day 1 – Thursday 12 May
Never have we been so disorganised! Not that we had a lot left to pack, but the dramas throughout the preceding few weeks had left us both a bit exhausted physically & mentally. Delayed Servicing being pushed back and pushed back by Jayco in Geelong meant weighing and having work done on the van were way too close to going away. Coupled with a few hiccups it all added up to a lot of stress and a very large hole in the bank account before we even left the driveway.
We’ve waited so long to do this trip that we pushed on and finally it was time to meet with our housesitters, run through the checklist, do a final sweep of the house and at around 4.00pm after a bit of a struggle to get the freezer set up in the back of the ute, we set off with no particular place to be – just no desire to start a 16 week trip on Friday the 13th. It was just on dark when we drove into Mortlake and pulled in to the caravan park. Originally planning to freecamp we opted for power for the night to help get things a little more organised.
Not much organising – I was in bed by the ridiculous hour of 7.30pm. It was an exhausting day all round.
So .......
Day 2 – Friday 13 May
Good Morning Mortlake!
We found ourselves surrounded by black “bin chickens” – about 10 of them running around and squawking at one another, and fog shrouding the park which unfortunately only got thicker as the morning wore on. We pulled out a little later than we hoped just after 8.00am (first morning..... so we’re forgiven I think) and were greeted with thick fog for well over an hour of our trip to Dooen, just beyond Horsham, making for slow travel and poor (read NO) photography opportunities.
We arrived just before lunch to meet up with Dave Robson – an awesome Auto Electrician we met 6 or so years ago and who has done a bit of work for us during that time. Dave and Shane have a special kind of relationship that makes me laugh every time, Dave is a cheeky bugger but professional and one of the good guys. They are always having a dig at one another, always in fun and giving as good as each one gets. Dave decided to call Shane Col (from Colac) so we’ve now nicknamed him the Dude from Dooen. With the majority of our issues fixed and a path forward for the ones we didn’t we decided to press on to put a few more kilometres between us and home.
With fingers crossed that the park wasn’t already full, we pulled into Beulah around 3.30pm to be surprised and blessed with being the only residents for the evening. There is something about this place I always find calming and so it was the perfect place to spend the night tonight. We didn’t set anything up outside, but enjoyed having the door open, the fresh air, sound of birds and peaceful ambience by the river. A tasty meal, a glass of wine - what better way to end day 2.
